A Symbol of Nationalism and Pride: Monas

by MasterBlaster on May 20, 2010

As Jakarta’s most famous landmark, Monas is a must see destination when visiting the country. This grand monument has great historical significance and represents the pride of the Indonesian people who stood up to fight against the Dutch colonial regime. This significance is further emboldened by its prominent location right in the heart of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

Created in 1961 under President Soekarno it was not completed until 1975 during President Soeharto’s time in office. Housed inside this significant monument are several museums which are the Freedom Hall and Hall of Contemplation.

This tower stands tall and uncluttered amongst Indonesia’s skyline and serves its purpose as a true symbol of Nationalism. At the top of the tower is a bubble like shape that houses an impressive 32 kilos of Gold that stands tall atop the tower in the shape of a flame. There is also an elevator that takes guests up to the observation platform that commands impressive views over the surrounding cityscape.

The design of the monument combines elements of both the masculine and the feminine together in a harmonious fusion. This is apparent through the design that is based on Lingga (a symbol that signifies the Hindu God Shiva) and Yoni (birthplace, origin, home).

Monas is the most significant monument in Jakarta and should not be missed when traveling to Indonesia. Being a hotel in Jakarta that is located close to this destination, guests of Millennium Hotel Sirih Jakarta can easily access this destination and several others in the city when staying here.
