Do you consider Shogun the uncrowned UFC Light Heavyweight Champion?

by MasterBlaster on March 18, 2010

I don’t know what the judges were watching but I thought he won the fight clearly.

Fight was clearly fixed. I agree 1 million %. Lyoto didn’t show up this fight. I wanted Lyoto to win, but not this way.

Dammit. I don’t understand this argument I keep hearing about the announcers making it “seem” like Rua was winning.

The people in the Arena couldn’t hear, and they were booing as much as everybody else.

Yes the champ comes in with an advantage, but getting countered every time, getting your ribs cracked, and getting your legs destroyed doesn’t make a winner.

I mean, did you guys watch Lyoto RUN away from Rua every time he wanted to engage?

They had to peel Lyoto off of Rua when they clinched. Rua lifted his hands and Machida kept hugging. Disgraceful.

It’s not like he won on points because he landed cleanly despite running away. He isn’t Mayweather. Machida looked like the beaten man at the end. And he lost. The crowd knew it, Rua knew it, and Machida knew it. Everybody but the refs.

And I wanted Machida to win by the way. He’s one of my favorite fighters.

You thought right. Shogun was clearly the winner of the fight. But because Machida was the champion, and the UFC has spent millions in marketing Machida as the next big thing- Dana White influenced the decision. That simple. Shogun is the #1 LHW when healthy.

The state commission has to do something about this bull–hit decisions.

A U March 18, 2010 at 19:48

Yes, clearly he had won the fight! I hate to sound biased, obviously Machida is a good fighter, I think he took the bait for the money! Total BS, we are all suckers, open our eyes. If that fight was won by Machida I will never watch another UFC fight again! Done!! Over!! Ridiculous, we are not THAT dumb!! Rau “Shogun” showed overwhelming dominance throughout.

na2 March 18, 2010 at 20:10

Yes, Shogun is the champ imo! He got robbed!

nick March 18, 2010 at 20:55

Well I thought he should’ve gotten the victory aswell, but the fact is, you can’t win a fight with only leg kicks.

70% of those leg kicks were answered by a left or right from Machida. The takedowns were stuffed, and when Machida had Shogun against the fence and was teeing off on him, all you could hear was Joe Rogan cupping Shogun’s balls and only mentioning how significant HIS strikes were.

And as Mike Goldberg said, “In order to be the champion, you must beat the champion”.. And Shogun didn’t significantly beat Machida.

HELL YEAH!!

Denz March 18, 2010 at 22:04

No, Shogun did obviously win. But styles make fights. If it was Forrest Griffin it would of ended with a real hard fight with Forrest most likely winning, if it was someone who fights like Lyoto, Anderson Silva for example would beat Forrest easy like he did. So the light heavyweight class is all mixed up honestly, i think Randy Couture could seriously take his almost 50 year old self and dominate it. If not they need the Spider.

Shogun Rua WON 10000000000000000000000%. (i like machida but he sure as hell didnt win)

Heart of the Matter March 18, 2010 at 22:29

No…the Dragon is still the champ.

I have it –
Round 3 – clearly to Machida
the other rounds split 2-2 (they were all very close and all 4 could go either way…so in fairness I gave 2 to each)

Shogun Rua did not clearly win any round…imo

so I have a split decision to Machida

Benji F March 18, 2010 at 22:38

Come on.
Just because a fighter is the aggressor doesn’t make him the winner.
Rua throw more, and missed,
Lyoto connected more, and threw less.
Kicks equal.
Knees- Lyoto
Take attempts- Rua
Take down blocks- Lyoto
Submission attempts- Lyoto
Submission blocks- Rua

Lyoto won.

AndrewM March 18, 2010 at 23:32

Were you watching the UFC broadcast with Joe Rogan screaming everytime Rua threw a kick, and screaming for Rua even when Machida was landing punches?

Watch it again. I thought the fight was very close, especially when you consider that it doesn’t matter who did more damage over the entirety, but who won individual rounds.

It could have gone either way. The biggest shame was that Rogan essentially robbed most viewers of the opportunity to make an honest evaluation of the fight.

sensesfail2490 March 19, 2010 at 00:31

He won. and on a poll it’s 1500-2000 ppl for Shogun and 100-200 ppl for Machida

Barragan L March 19, 2010 at 01:28

I think they were even, sure Shogun threw a lot of leg kicks but frankly that’s all. Everything else was hit for hit, tit for tat. Both has power combos and charges.
Neither really lost or was significantly beaten. I’ll say it was a controversial win but a win none the less.

L☺s March 19, 2010 at 02:21

Yes I do…..

I like Machida but Rua just had an answer (countered) most of Lyoto’s strikes…the only round where I saw Lyoto winning was in round 3 when he unloaded a flurry of punches….but other than that Rua pretty much controlled and countered him all night…

people may use the leg-kicks as an argument but really Rua still did more damage to Lyoto…he just tagged him more even if you minus the leg kicks….he had more cleaner shots…..

thedragonmachida March 19, 2010 at 02:29

The main reason why Rua lost is because he tried to win the belt by going to decision. As the announcer said, “to be the champ you have to beat the champ.” The other reason why people think Rua won is because of Joe Rogan and the other guy announcer. These guys were looking at the fight from Rua’s perspective. They made litte mention about what Machida was actually doing. As a result, thousands of fans paid little attention to what Machida was doing. What won it for Machida was rounds 1 and 2. It was clear he won round 3 and lost 4 and 5. R1 and R2 seemed very close, or not close at all if you were listening to Joe Rogan. The difference was in the scoring and the camera angle. A few times when Rua kicked Machida’s ribs, the camera would only show Rua landing, but it didn’t show Machida’s counter punch landing. Since we didn’t see this, we assumed Rua was scoring when in reality, the points were going to Machida. This is how he won R1 and R2 and, therefore, the fight.

Thank god. Someone with a grain of intelligence here. Yes, I think maybe Shogun won 48-47, but it’s not nearly the robbery some people make it out to be.
