Do you think Dana White unfairly try to make people think UFC=MMA?

by MasterBlaster on June 1, 2010

Before pride went bankrupt, no announcer were even allowed to say ‘pride’. and all their belts were ‘world champions’ when it was just a small section of fighters.

Dana White has built the largest Mixed Martial Arts Promotion in the world and as far as he is concerned and what he wants the world to see is that the Ultimate Fighting Championship is Mixed Martial Arts. He has worked hard to crush rival promotions and in fact bought Pride Fighting Championships. That is why Spike TV now runs the Best of Pride every week.

Sort of. He is doing what any businessman that is trying to push their product to be the best and the most well known. Many new fans and casual fans believe UFC=MMA. Those known as “hardcore” fans are better informed and know UFC doesn’t equall mma and know that it is a brand and realize the sport is Mixed Martial Arts. Their are plenty of other promotions putting on solid fight cards around the world, though most people wouldn’t know the names of the organizations or fighters. The UFC does for the most part have a lot of well known talent in their organization.

It is understandable. He obviously doesn’t want his announcers giving free publicity to rival mma companies. Why would he? At least there is competition between companies in mma. The US government allows legal monopolies in pro football, basketball, baseball and hockey! Those sports are exempt from anti-trust laws that govern all other industries!

I am sure that is some of the intent of Dana White and the Zuffa group. There is nothing stronger than brand names and if you can attach an entire sport to a brand name, in this instance MMA to the UFC, then you have control of that sport, will be the richest and largest group…which at this time the UFC definitely is in the world of MMA.

This is just good business on his part even though many people who train in both real martial arts as well as the sport of MMA know the difference. The average layperson has no idea that the UFC is a promotional company and that MMA is a generic term referring to the sport…just like most people the watch and train MMA probably have no idea that it is not even a martial art but it is a combat sport.

UFC doesn’t quite = MMA, but it is the best MMA organization out there right now. The UFC has all the best fighters in all the best weight classes, & the best pound for pound in the world Anderson Silva. It’s not the only MMA fans should watch but it’s definitely more entertaining, because it has the best of the best.

No I don’t but I do think he reminds people sometimes that the UFC is the number one organization for MMA when talking and his approach to things. If you read some of my earlier answers you will also see that I think that there is a possibility that may not always be the case in the future. At one time the NFL in football and MLB in baseball thumbed their noses at the American Football League and American League in baseball. That is no longer the case and now they are both actually part of those organizations and are recognized as equals. I am sure that there are some who when reading this will disagree with it but who would have thought ten years ago that GM and half the other auto manufacturers would be bankrupt and out of business for the most part now?

There are a lot of things that need to happen for this to change in regard to MMA and the UFC but I do think you have some of those things happening right now. Strikeforce is on the national network-not PPV and they have some good fighters. They also are co-promoting fights with Dream and title matches are taking place for each others belts. The UFC is starting to have problems putting together quality match-ups with experienced fighters. Also many of those fighters that are good are really in the twilight of their careers and guys like Roy Nelson or amateurs with five or six fights who go pro and have one or two pro fights are not going to sell PPV. The UFC ship is still ridding high in the water but they need an influx of some good fighters in most of the weight divisions and it is not happening maybe as fast or much as it needs to for that ship to keep ridding as high as it is now.

This all will force them to change some things eventually and offer more cards on the cable and satellite channels and get fighters more exposure, experience, and recognition by the fighting public I think. Whether or not it forces them to embrace the other organizations is much harder to predict but they won’t do any of this until it is more advantageous for them to. The WBC and WBA in boxing for years had a very adversarial relationship and fighters fought in one or the other and titles were not exchanged and lines were not crossed. Eventually big name match-ups and greater profits for all brought this change about to what you have now in boxing.
