Does fighting for only one organization like Pride or UFC help or hurt the sport?

by MasterBlaster on March 11, 2010

It seems like it would be great if there was more flexibility in Pride vs. UFC fighters. If Fedor could fight Sylvia, If Liddell could fight Henderson etc. I know eventually when the contract is up they can switch organizations. Shouldn’t there be some type of cross fighting agreement? It would make for some great fights.

The problem with too much flexibility is then you end up like boxing where no one is making good fights. The managers start using the flexibility to avoid any risky fights. I suppose the UFC and Pride makes good fights because they have more control and call all the shots.

So what do you all think is it good that the organizations have a monoply.

well, that’s hard to say, yeah, i’d love for fedor to kick the living $#!+ out of sylvia.. but who’s to say..

having seperate orgs might also help in the area of talent.. there’s many different fighters in each organization.. if they were able to crossover, you might only see a handful of fighters…

but like you said, there’s be the possibility of watching some really great fights! well, we’ll just have to wait and see what the corporate execs decide in the long run…

Obviously we fans would like to watch the best possible match ups. But for now, we will have to settle for the fact that their are a whole bunch of great fighters all over the world who on any given night can probalby beat each other. When the sport of mma grows and the fans demand these fights, and the money is right , we will see these fights happen.

Right now… the organizations have the REAL power, it’s the UFC name that brings people like Chuck to fight with them. However, with every new MMA organization the FIGHTERS take more control. Eventually shows like Pride and UFC are going to dish out millions of dollars for fighters at the top. The competition between organizations is the best thing for the sport. You will see that MMA will be governed more like Boxing.

The fighters are the stars Pride, UFC are taking the lion’s share for themselves though.

Pride actually does allow its fighters to fight for other organizations, even their big stars like Fedor and Wanderlie are allowed to fight in their own country’s and if there is a fight in another organization that one of the Pride fighters wants to participate in the president of PrideFC will work with what he has planned and try to make it happen.

The UFC makes fighters sign exclusive contracts so they cannot fight for any other organization not only for a certian amount of fights but also a certain amount of time. (Brandon Vera was offered $1.5 million signing bonus and $300,000 per fight by Elite XC and so he asked the UFC to match the offer and not only did they deny him anywhere close to that kind of money they are forcing him to sit on the bench until the the end of his 2-year contract and then make him fight his last fight in a non-televised preliminary bout as to not give him anymore publicity going into the Showtime organization.)
