Today’s daily photo is a fun pic of an old friend putting it all on the line during a local MMA fight night last Friday. Shooting through the cage added a new twist to capturing fast action sports indoors. The Canon 7D and 50mm f1.4 lens performed exceptionally well! I use that camera and lens combination for my fast action wrestling pics which are very challenging in low light. In a previous post, I shared some tips for shooting fast action sports indoors.
At one point, I tried my 70-200mm 2.8 which didn’t do well in the extremely low light setting. I needed the extra couple stops of light gained with the 50mm f1.4 which made a huge difference in the available shutter speeds. The low f-stop also helped the camera focus through the cage and some images eliminated the cage all together. They allowed flash at the event which surprised me. I had my 580 EXII flash but I forgot to bring a Tungsten gel so I decided to just crank up the ISO to 3200 which was just enough to get some decent shutter speeds in the low light.
After shooting so much landscape stuff in recent weeks, it was great to push the Canon 7D to its 8 shots a second action capabilities. I set the white balance to Tungsten, flipped it into jpeg mode with AI Servo and just mashed the shutter button. I was able to fill the buffer a couple times but for the most part the 7D kept up and I came away with some awesome shots.
On the processing side, I used native noise reduction in Lightroom 3 and applied a red filter BW preset which I feel helps capture the spirit of the image. It was a great time and fun photo experience. I’m looking forward to the next event!
