Gracie Insider – How to Mount at the Gracie Academy in Miami

by MasterBlaster on October 5, 2010

www.GracieAcademy.com In this month’s video Rener teaches a very reliable transition from the side mount to the full mount and he introduces you to the Valente Brothers who operate the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Miami, Florida.

Driven by the phenomenal success of the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) bouts on pay-per-view television, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is now the fastest-growing sport in the United States. As its name suggests, MMA combines techniques of various other fighting systems, including boxing, jujitsu, wrestling, judo, karate, kickboxing, kung fu, and taekwondo. Decades after a Brazilian fighting style known as vale tudo (anything goes) began to spark local and international interest in the late 1920s, MMA burst into full-color in America in 1993, with the formation of the UFC. Financed by the Semaphore Entertainment Group, led by New York music promoter Robert Meyrowitz, UFC bouts began more as violent spectacles than sporting events, with fighters from various disciplines battling it out in the same ring to the delight of bloodthirsty crowds. Rorion Gracie, a Brazilian living in California, organized the first fight and designed the trademark arena, the Octagon. Aside from three simple rules—no biting, eye-gouging, or fish-hooking (placing your finger in an opponents mouth and pulling backwards—the UFC prided itself on no-holds-barred fighting, with little regulation. Even as MMAs popularity grew, politicians condemned the sport, including John McCain, who in 1996 called it human cockfighting. In November 2000, the UFC added weight classes and 28 more rules, outlawing head butts, hair pulling, and groin shots. As of May 2007, 23 states and the District of Columbia sanction

You can tell that Renner is an excellent teacher just by his speaking skills. You don’t hear any: Ummmmm…..ahhhhhhhh……hurrrrrrrr from this guy. He knows exactly what he wants to say and puts it together very concisely. Superb!

Very clear and full of detail. Getting the basics and fundamentals down perfectly is the key to great jiu-jitsu. When i first started in 2001, I whined to my instructor (Caique, formerly at the Gracie Academy) that we kept doing the same stuff every week. Mount escapes, side mount escape, guard escape, defense, basic offense… I complained for months until I competed. I was amazed how strong I in technique compared to other students. Basics and a good foundation are everything.

waldomarek October 5, 2010 at 14:39

@TriangleJiuJitsu agreed, same goes with any martial arts… the better you get in any MA, hopefully your “MA spirit” will get better as well, as in, you know you can hurt people with your learnt skills, but is violent always necessary to ‘solve’ things? nope.

buckckck October 5, 2010 at 15:25

so effectiflyxD

luizinho81 October 5, 2010 at 16:23

gracie jiu jitsu sucks!!!!!!!!!!!its unrealistic not effective against more than one or even in a real street fight mma is the way all gracies have gotten beat by true mma rener would get his assed kicked in a real fight matt hughes rules!!!!!!

Pallhh October 5, 2010 at 17:05

nice instruction

aoaapocalpse October 5, 2010 at 17:50

pushing your knee back will get his leg out of the way, it doesnt really matter where his leg is, but having your knee close to his knee makes it easier to do the knee elbow escape

cmzuppe October 5, 2010 at 18:00

umm what happens if he doesn’t flatten his knee out like you instructed him to

1lostinspace October 5, 2010 at 18:39

I love the Gracie History and I also met their grandfather lol he was showing us a guard pass and I did not get it so he slapped me in the back of the head lol.

Scottjuliemm October 5, 2010 at 18:40

Great video… love the way you teach! 5 starts!!! Thank you

chavamma October 5, 2010 at 19:11

I totally agree with you, great concept there! He’s always saying Keep It Real, As a Judoka I keep my slef-defense real 100% all the time, I practice BJJ though I dont like the concept of starting on the floor in a real fight like you said you won’t be on the floor you hit em hard, effectively & get out. MMA is just exchanging technique with your opponent so basiclly he’ll always come back 2 beat you and vise versa. Nice statement there! Keep’n It Real! -Kind Regards- ChavaMMA

greensilence4ya October 5, 2010 at 19:47

MMA was actually brought into popularity by Bruce Lee. His style taught to use all styles as one/ or no style as a style as he put it. In many of his movies he used ju jitsu wreastling submissions karate tkd muay thai elbows boxing judo kung fu and much much more in to one style that makes any fighter different from any other fighter of the same or a different style.

@moelicious416

19thaman79 October 5, 2010 at 20:51

@darkmulawin MMA is from Greece over 3000 years ago(Pankration).

19thaman79 October 5, 2010 at 21:39

The commentator of the video is seriously lacking knowledge of martial arts. For beginners, both Sambo and BJJ are derivatives Judo which was directly derived from Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Modern day mma is Pankration with rules which goes back 3000 years.

VitorMartinsCunha October 5, 2010 at 22:07

Although UFC is american mma was not developed in america, but in the whole world. MMA stands for Mixed Martal Arts, that means that the fight envolves diferent grapling/standing fight styles like BJJ, Wrestling, Boxing, Karate, Muay Thai, Judo, Sambo, Kickboxing and etc.

zzzzzzzzzz098 October 6, 2010 at 00:30
