I’ve heard Dana White say there have been no deaths from MMA, but with this brutal of a sport, there HAS to be more than just one death. What I mean by that is I know that Sam Vasques died from after effects, but I am wondering if he’s the only one that has.

about 2 in history i think?
I think one guy from the Lion’s Den have from MMA..
I don’t know if that is the guy you mentioned though.
hello,
there was one who died during a match.
there was a russian, who fought despite not having medical clearance to do so. he fought anyway. the promotion was unlicensed, or his lack of medical clearance would have prevented him from entering the event.
the guy from lions den was evan tanner. he died of dehydration while in the desert.
there are also a number of mma fighters who have been murdered or commited suicide. suicides among mma fighters are, by percentage, less frequent than most other occupations.
mma is quite safe (medically speaking). granted, you remove a couple rules and there would be deaths-o-plenty… but the current model works very well.
if you think about it, referees won’t even let a fight continue if a fighter is cut.
referees can stop fights for any reason.
doctors can stop fights for any medical reason.
doctors can refuse clearance of a fighter prior to a fight. they can do so if a fighter has a simple cold.
mma is actually safer than it probably needs to be.
thanks
Back in Dec 2007, I read about a guy dying during a MMA match. Hispanic guy I think. I believe the problem was he was unfit and had a stroke or something. He was in good shape but had other problems evidently. MMA is relatively safe, but we all could be surprised someday soon, especially with people getting slammed on their necks.
The first death related to MMA was Douglas Dredge, who fought a bareknuckle, unsanctioned fight in the Ukraine. He fought there because he wasn’t medically cleared to fight in the US. He was blacking out in training. I really don’t count this towards MMA because he was fighting at a virtually no-rules event, not modern MMA, and counting his death towards the death count in MMA would be like connecting bareknuckle boxing deaths to those of modern boxing.
I heard stories of a Korean dying at an unsanctioned event in his native country, but haven’t found any articles to support this.
The other notable death is Sam Vasquez, who, according to some reports, has a preexisting cerebral edema going into his fight. That’s the only fighter to die under modern MMA rules.
And even though I’m not a big fan of his, I believe Dana White is careful to word his statement along the lines of, “Nobody has ever died in the UFC”, which is true.
I don’t think that the world is ready for how badass that UFC 115 is gonna be, does anyone else feel the same way?
