worst damage i’ve seen in an mma fight was a broken leg. there’s gonna be cuts and bruises and lots of blood, but he won’t die. unless he sucks. then he’ll die. just kidding.

KwonKicker May 24, 2010 at 20:08

Very dangerous. Only the serious should take this up. Also, it should not be used to so called “fight clubs” … fight only in the gym or sanctioned competition. Your boyfriend should make sure he learns from a credible instructor.

Haven’t you seen the episode of icarly???? VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY DANGEROUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no no but they are fun to watch…

ORGANIZED MMA fighting isn’t as dangerous as people tend to think. Doing it as part of a recognized group, that follows all of the rules and takes proper precautions. Its the underground stuff that idiots film and put on youtube that is dangerous.

The refs are trained to step in and stop the fight the moment a fighter can’t defend themself. Compare it to boxing. A boxer gets 10 seconds to try to stand up. What if he gets up and is on autopilot, seemingly ok, so they let the fight keep going without knowing the real situation?

And people who first join an MMA gym won’t actually be fighting for a very long time. They might spar some at practice, but nothing serious. There is a long period of learning and heavy conditioning. Most people who join it don’t join with the intention (or ability) of becoming a professional. They joint to reap the benefits of the incredible workout it gives you.

Well, football players have the chance of suffering worse injuries than those sustained by MMA fighters. These men (and women) train long and hard and prepare their bodies for the punches and kicks that they will endure. Ive also seen pretty bad injuries in other sports like figure skating, horseback riding and high diving. So there is risk in all sports and one isnt more dangerous than the other.

really more painful then dangerous

Sanctioned MMA is a lot less dangerous than boxing. In 2009 (this year alone) these people have died because of boxing related injuries…

2009-01-01 : Kyo Noguchi
2009-01-04 : Jisselle Salandy
2009-01-04 : Billy Thompson

2009-03-09 : Vince Cervi

However, MMA has had only 1 (count it… ONE) recorded death ever in a sanctioned match which was in 2007 when Texas-based fighter Sam Vasquez succumbed to his injuries after being knocked out by Vince Libardi at a Renegades Extreme Fighting show. He suffered from a brain aneurysm which could have been a medical condition before he fought.

The reason MMA is much safer is because your not getting your face punched in for more than 5 rounds. You can be submitted or choked out. I would rather be put in a triangle choke and pass out for 5 seconds then be punched continously in my face so my brain is rattling around in my head. Not to mention the recover time for MMA is much less than boxing!

There is NO other sport in the whole world which is more safe than MMA.
Isn’t that funny? It looks so brutal and violent, but it’s actually the LEAST dangerous sport out there.

And yes, there has only been ONE single death count in MMA so far.
His death can be questioned to be medical, too.
The only other death count was in an unsanctioned bout, so it does not count.

If he trains to be a good grappler, then he’ll sustain even less damage.

mma is alot safer than alot of other sports, in boxing you have more risk of running into brain damage, and other serious injuries because your only getting punched in the head, in mma there is wrestling, kickboxing, submissions ect. the referees are always ensuring the safety of the fighters, if a fighter doesn’t protect himself the fight his stopped.

Out of 10687 matches put on by major MMA organizations dating back to 1993 (Pride, UFC, Pancrase, Shooto, Hook N Shoot, King of the Cage, Superbrawl, Rage in the Cage, Rings, and Extreme Challenge), there was never a death or serious injury.

The most common injuries resulting from an MMA match are cuts (purely cosmetic), broken bones or sprained ligaments in the hands and feet, and occationally a concussion. When a fighter suffers a concussion, they are not allowed to compete for at least six months, and must pass a doctors examination before they can compete again. Actually, fighters must pass a physical before every match.

MMA has a better safety record than boxing, gymnastics, skiing, cheerleading, and football. Not combined, but individually.

It’s still full-contact, and there’s a higher risk of injury in MMA than in, say, playing snooker, but your boyfriend’s right. Most people assume that there’s an inordinate amount of serious injuries and death, which is simply not true. Under the modern rules, there’s been one death, and it’s suspected that he had a pre-existing medical condition that a shady promoter ignored for the sake of putting on a show.

I would say MMA, in terms of how dangerous it can be, is comparable to football, rugby and other high contact sports out there. I have heard that there are more catastophic injuires (paralysis and life altering injuries) in gymnastics and even cheerleading.

I’ve spent my entire life training martial arts and have fought professional for nearly seven years (UFC,TKO,APEX,HCF) and have sustained mostly minor injuries (ribs, nose, ankles, muscles etc.).

My worst injuries were when I had my teeth knocked out by a headbutt during a pro fight and some concussion problems due to so many years of training. It’s been all worth it, as the positives have far outweighed the negatives.

Make sure when he starts training that he joins a gym who has experience in building fighters up, so that his training is as safe as possible. Most injuries happen in training not in the actual fights.

Hope this helps.

Christ everyone and there mother thinks they can fight these days
Tell him to take a striking discipline and a ground discipline, and get those down first

secondly how old is this kid?

Generally, its not that dangerous, as long as it is a sanctioned fight, the refs will stop it if he starts getting pounded, i.e. TKO, the worst perhaps a broken limb if he isnt careful or a concussion

Agnostic Front May 25, 2010 at 02:21

its much less dangerous than boxing.

pugpaws2 May 25, 2010 at 02:23

It is as dangerous as the people doing it. No more, no less!

Zenlife May 25, 2010 at 02:44

Any full contact concept/style is dangerous.

Best wishes :) ***

It’s less dangerous than boxing because the grappling and clinching allow to conserve energy and not always exchange blows.

Everything has some degree of risk, even skiing or soccer.
