How do get started becoming a MMA/UFC fighter?

by MasterBlaster on June 1, 2010

As i’m nearing my black belt test for hapkido, i was hoping to actually do something with it. I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice on my next steps towards being an amature fighter. I’d like to step in the ring with someone my skill level to see whether i should pursue this ambition or let the dream die.

(btw, I know that being a black belt doesn’t mean i can fight, so don’t bother saying it)

Research, MMA gyms/fight Gyms near you.

Search for those schools in your area and competitions. I would suggest doing kickboxing first then going into mma
if u have no ground background.

Look for a an MMA gym near you. However I know the Powerhouse gym near me does MMA but their BJJ is terrible. I studied a form of Kung Fu and my instructor had good info on other instructors in the area (who knows what’s up and whos faking it) so try asking your hapkido instructor if he knows any BJJ places worth a flip. Hopefully your local MMA gyms are well rounded but if not and you get going you may want to train BJJ elsewhere

that is a good standup game for now…I would just take a BJJ class and you should be fine to compete at the amateur level
