How does the scoring system work in MMA?

by MasterBlaster on June 6, 2010

I was just curious to know how the 3 judges come to their final consensus at the end of a fight which goes the distance in MMA and how each fighter gets awarded points during the fight.

I want to know this because I’m a huge fan of MMA and love to talk about it with friends, so knowing this would make me sound a little bit more educated on the sport.

Watch UFC 101 this saturday and pay attention what the announcers actually say. It’s not that difficult if you listen to the play by play.

They use a 10 point must system, which means that the winner of the round will receive 10 points while the other person receives 9 pts or less. The way they score the rounds are based on effective striking, aggression and octagon control. After each round, the judge determines the winner of the round and turns his or her’s card in at the end of the round, so that they may not go back and change their respective scores. After the fight, the totals are tallied up and the winner is announced.

Tim there gave a pretty fair answer there and I will only add that effective aggressiveness is a factor and you can further break that down and look at who is shooting for or getting take-downs, who is working for submissions and chokes more and coming closer to getting their opponent into a predicament where they might choke or tap them out. Ten points goes to the winner of the round and nine points or less to the loser. You will sometimes score a round 10-8 and that is a round where a guy is being pretty well dominated the entire round. In most cases you will never see a 10-7 round as the fight gets stopped usually. Points for fouls are deducted from a fighters total at the scoring table and if a fighter loses a point that means it is a point on all three scorecards so that actually is three points from his total.

Some states are very strict about judges and the licensing of them while others are not. Those states that are strict about that are usually strict about everything else so that the maximum effort for integrity and correctness can be maintained and a good and honest decision can be rendered.

the judges are looking for effective striking and octagon control. so if you appear to have control the fight and have landed the most devastating strikes you can count on a win https://www.mmatrainingnow.com
