LOL…first off you can open a school whenever you want but that does not mean anyone will take you seriously. You will want to teach for your instructor for at least five years so you understand the responsibility with owning, managing and teaching at a martial art school. Secondly belts don’t mean anything in terms of being a great teacher…what does? Your ability to teach others correctly, passing on of knowledge and truly caring about helping them achieve through learning. Any idiot can open a martial arts school and teach idiot arts…only a real martial artist will work hard enough to earn the right from their instructor to be given the privledge to teach others. You will also want to go to college and get a degree in business if you plan on running a martial arts school.

Unfortunately, there’s no regulatory body for martial arts. There’s nothing from stopping anyone from opening up a martial arts school whenever they feel like it.

It takes more than just knowledge to open up a school. You need capitol, you need advertising, you need all that other stuff that comes with running a business. Honestly, just to avoid all the business-side headaches, I’d rather coach at a school owned by someone else. Everything I’ve heard from MA school owners is that more often than not, it’s not a money-making venture. One guy I know said he didn’t turn a profit for about five years.

Personally, I would be suspicious of anyone who opened a school with less than ten years experience. Not everyone is a good teacher, either, which can lose you customers in the end. A martial arts school owner has to wear a lot of hats: instructor, business manager, mentor, coach, representitive of the system(s), advertiser, PR rep, etc.

i would say 10 year absolute min of training or 2 or 3 years teaching under your instructor.

then again anyone can open a mma school they just need to find a decent instructor.

Well first off the other’s are right, there is no regulatory governing body to oversee all martial arts business and licenseing. Since you are 16 and only a blue belt, I would highly recommend waiting until your at least 21 and with around 5 years of “supervised” teaching with an experience and licensed instructor. Mixed martial arts (which I am against) is not really an art, so therefore you can’t really be licensed to teach it pursay. In order to teach mixed martial arts you really just need to know 2 or more systems, example (boxing and wrestling) or (boxing, wrestling, tae kwon do) or etc etc…

But my advise would be to wait until you’ve got more experience and have the backing of a seasoned and certified instructor for credential purposes as well as knowledge.

good luck
