I want a real poll from boxing fans?

by MasterBlaster on May 1, 2010

Do you think Floyd Mayweather or any other skilled boxer can beat a UFC or Pride regular, in their weight class, in an MMA rules fight? That is the question. I know alot of you out there wanna say ‘well Floyd would win in a boxing match’ or ‘you can’t compare apples and oranges’ I’m not asking that. These are Mayweathers exact words, “Put one of our guys in UFC and he’d be the champion. Any good fighter, he’d straight knock them out.” So what do you think?
If you are only a boxing fan and are uneducated in other martial arts then you are not qualified to answer this question.

Right – Apples and oranges!

No way a boxer can last in an MMA ring. I am training in MMA and boxers are absolutely lost once they go to the ground.

Two different sports with different rules. Can not answer a question about a fighter if has never fought that sport. Besides I think it is publicity hype……

Madrider May 1, 2010 at 19:39

Again I say, an MMA fighter would win, I think. Multiple disciplines vs. one. I like boxing without a doubt, but Pride and UFC rule. Even Pancrase in Japan is good to watch. Love watching those dudes fight.

they are not gonna see that low kick fade and punch coming!!!

I dont know why Mayweather said this, normally it is the UFC guys who try to compare their sport to boxing for attention b/c UFC receives such little attention.
but to answer the question
In terms of the best boxers fighting the best UFC/MMA guys (b/c a good boxer would beat a bad UFC/MMA person regardless of MMA or boxing rules, and a good UFC/MMA fighter would beat a low-skilled boxer regardless of rules.

I think the majority of times a boxer fights a mixed martial artist in MMA type rules, the boxer will lose; however, he still has a chance (a better chance than if it is a boxing match).
This is because, like Mayweather has said, most UFC guys lead with their head (and they do this in order to get in close, which is where most UFC fighting takes place, in close). So, a boxer has that opportunity to do what he does best, which is punching (with lighter gloves so punches hurt more). Why Mayweather thinks he has such a great punch is confusing to me. Also, his hands have tendencies to break and without the protection of gloves his hands are more likely to get hurt

However, any smart UFC fighter wouldnt even put himself in that position. What if a UFC fighter were to just lie down the entire time and wait for the boxer. I cant imagine a boxer being able to out-wrestle a fighter who wrestles for a living.

On the other hand, a mixed martial artist could never beat a boxer (with the exception of a lucky punch but a good boxer should never be in that situation ). It would be like an amateur fighting a pro.

A big difference between UFC/MMA fighters versus boxers, is that the UFC/MMA fighters dont fight that often compared to boxers (sure they train and spar as much as boxers) but good boxers often have hundreds of amateur and a decent amount of professional fighting.

I think most boxing fans know by now to just ignore Mayweather most of the time (the man has been known to make dumb comments). The UFC and media just dont know this yet.

Floyd is just being Floyd. He likes to run off at the mouth before he thinks. A boxer couldn’t beat a UFC or pride fighter using MMA rules. But you put a UFC fighter in against a boxer fighting under the rules of boxing, the boxer cleans their clock. MMA fighters are well versed in kicking, grappling and the ground game. But they couldn’t match a boxer in striking skills (with the fists). MMA fighters in comparison to boxers are sloppy strikers.

It all comes down to skill, just like a few other people have said already. If a boxer can train to block kicks and evade takedowns, he can win the fight. A good pro boxer has way more fighting experience than any MMA guy.

Pro boxers aren’t afraid to get hit and won’t back down unless you tag them real good, which is hard to do against a good boxer. I’ve seen MMA guys start to panic and back pedal once they start to get hit, this is why Chuck Liddell is so successful. He overwhelms opponents with flurries until they start to back away, and once that happens, its all over. I don’t think the Iceman could do that against a good seasoned boxer.

Boxers are better conditioned, but MMA guys are stronger. Boxers would struggle on the ground, but the MMA guys would not be able to hang with boxers in a slugfest.

I don’t think a pro boxer would be as dominant as Floyd Mayweather may think, but he definately wouldn’t get destroyed either. Many of the current MMA guys don’t have the fighting experience that most boxers have. I think Chuck Liddell would do the best against a pro boxer in tems of current MMA guys. Tito Ortiz doesn’t protect himself very well, and some of the others I’ve seen just aren’t good enough in my opinion.

UFC and Pride fighting resembles something we engaged in back in my youth. Back then, we called it street fighting.

If, for example, a current prize fighter got in the cage with one of those guys – let’s say a heavyweight – I would pit David Tua or Samuel Peter to win because they have just enough boxing skills to avoid getting hit but enjoy a brawling style that would serve them well.

bigpimpin694life May 1, 2010 at 23:24

I think Mayweather would get KILLED in the octagon. His boxing skills are great but once he got taken down he would be so far lost on the mat. I doubt that he would have the boxing skills to avoid a take down. It would be over in less than a minute. He was challenged by white to get into the ring and pussed out so we all know who would win.

kandyrain May 1, 2010 at 23:42

To ask this question then maybe you are not a true fan of boxing and UFC! Any UFC fighter can win a boxer…..however if the boxer is well trained in all areas then there should be no reason why a TRUE boxer can’t win. You see a UFC fighter has the upper hand on the fight. They are well trained in all types of martial arts. They are trained to take and give submition, armbars, and ect. A boxer can throw one punch and NKO a UFC fighter but the UFC fighter can move and dance around to get out of the way of the punch and bring down the boxer with a leg swing or arm wire. I don’t think a boxer is ready for that type of one on one match.

chrisa_tapout May 2, 2010 at 00:00

No I dont think that would be possible, I mean Floyd with little baby 4 oz. gloves would be a force, but his hands are brittle and they break easy……A fight between say, Mayweather vs. Sean Sherk (wresteler), Sherk wins no doubt, unless of course he stands up with him, then there’s no doubt Mayweather wins…..But it’s a fight, so anything can happen…..

jeremy g May 2, 2010 at 00:03

Being a big fan of both sports its hard to say. I will say MMA fighters are well versed in all disciplines. Take UFC’s Randy Couture for example. He is the ground, and pound, wrestling king. Although he stood toe to toe, and beat Tim Silvia who was suppose to be a devastating Knock out power fighter, and out weighed Randy by about sixty pounds. Oh yeah and gave up like 12 inches of reach.

This just proves anyone can win a fight on any given day. I would Love to see Mayweather fight Shawn Sherk. That guy is a sick wrestler. He is so freakishly strong he can rip limbs off of guys, I would say Shawn Sherk could shoot, and take Mayweather down before he even knew he was in the Octagon. Either way it would be a huge event.

I would feel confident in saying the UFC sales more pay per view events then boxing. I have no figures to go by, but the sport is growing at a rapid pace.

BOXERS WOULD MOST LIKELY LOSE AGAINST A UFC FIGHTER……NOW IF IT’S JUST PUNCHES AND KICKS THEN MAYBE A BOXER CAN STAND A CHANCE. A BOXER HAS NO IDEA HOW TO SUBMIT A OPPONENT WHEN THEY HIT THE GROUND……LET’S PUT B.J. PEN VS. MAYWEATHER……THE FIRST MINUTE IN THE ROUND WILL PROBABLY BE STRIKING AND MAYWEATHER WILL HAVE AN ADVANTAGE, BUT AS THE ROUND CONTINUES PEN WILL MOST LIKELY FIGURE FLOYD’S STYLE AND GO FOR THE STRIKE……WHEN THEY HIT THE GROUND PEN MIGHT PUT MAYWEATHER IN A TRIANGLE CHOKE AND ARM BAR HOLD THAT FLOYD WILL HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO ESCAPE…….MAYWEATHER TALKS TRASH AND MAKING THAT COMMENT TO THE UFC FIGHTERS IS PLAIN ARROGANT AND DUMB, LIKE YOU SAID APPLE AND ORANGES. MAYWEATHER SHOULD CONCENTRATE IN HIS HIS BIG FIGHT AGAINST DLH, INSTEAD OF STEPPING ON UNCHARTED WATERS.

so i read that article like an hour ago… i think it is such crap. i had to call my instructor so we could have a good laugh. i am currently a muay thai kickboxer and i think if you put any great boxer in a ring with any mixed martial artist and the boxer is going down. boxers are not conditioned to take the hits that a mixed marital artist is trained to do. a few leg kicks to the side or the head to a boxer well leave them stunned and beaten up. i really think mayweather is just saying this for a publicity stunt. i wish a boxer would have the balls to get in a ring with one of us. boxers are only good for ducking and hitting, we are trained to ground and pound, kickbox, box, use our knees and elbows, etc.

Boxing is losing major market share. MMA is on the rise. 5 years ago boxing wouldn’t even mention an MMA organization, but now they are feeling the loss of revenue at PPV, Box Office, and merchandise. That is why I feel Floyd spoke up.

Now on the the question. No way could a Pro Boxer last in a top-tier MMA organization. He may get lucky and win 1 or 2 by knockout before 30 seconds is up, but he’s not going to win a belt, or even 5 fights. Sure, a probox could win at the lower levels of competition, but not UFC, PrideFC, or K-1 Heroes. (I doubt even K-1 standup. Tua tried it out, Briggs tried it out, Tyson talked about it).
When a boxer gets tired, he can get an 8 count. No 8 count in MMA – you just get pounded on some more. 3 minute rounds in boxing, not in MMA. Try sprinting for 3 minutes, tough huh? Now try for 5! or PrideFC 10 minute 1st round. Boxers can clinch for a breath, but clinching in MMA means someone is going to switch from standup to ground game after a takedown. Boxers can turn their back on a fighter and not get punched – turn your back in MMA and someone’s sticking a foot up your arse, or jumping on your back and choking you out. Yes, boxers are good at punching, but don’t have a clue on what to do if they’re not on their feet.

Floyd is a good boxer, but he’s in the boxing game, not the MMA game. Probably good thing for him.

goodguy8500 May 2, 2010 at 02:11

I think that in a MMA rules match a MMA fighter would beat a skilled boxer because there are different aspects to MMA then just stand up boxing. Boxers would beat a MMA fighter in stand up, but the boxer is unskilled in the ground and submission aspect of MMA so thats how a MMA fighter would want to fight the boxer. But if a boxer can learn to fight on the ground then they can become great fighters in MMA.

writersblock2006 May 2, 2010 at 02:29

it would depend on the skill level of each of the fighters.
I read above alot of the same, once you get taken down a boxers lost — yeah but tryingto take a good balanced, quick footed boxer down isnt as easy as it appears to happen on TV>

Now, if you have someone like Tito Ortiz fighting De la hoya, then I say tito will rush and there is nothign delahoya could do.

But you match Liddell against the same caliber boxer youre going to find that timing and speed are going to be the biggest attributes to fdetermine the winner.

Remember, a UFC fighter has to break the distance, that means getting through the jab.
Usually you get a shoot in move, that could be timed with a quick step back and a lead hook.
Or even just timed with a straight.

One thing most UFC guys have a hard time handling is a guy who knows how to throw a punch.

Belflor has quick hands, and Ive seen him take down guys without having to go to the mat.
Now think, a top caliber fighter will have faster punches than that that will hit smack on the nose smack on the chin–better use of the jab, better hook to defend against the shoot.

Theres no question of what happens once you get the boxer on the ground.
But my point is will your UFC fighter be able to get it to that.

For UFC fighters, even a thai fighter, your biggest target would be that lead foot a boxer needs to lead with to get off his punches.
A few kicks to the thighs that boxers arent accustomed to could drop him quicky.

But again, its only if you can time that boxer.
So its not really a question of who would win — they both would win if they could impose their own strategies on the other, its just a matter of what style each fighter has, and whos faster, has better technique, gets off quicker (remember boxers fight for 10+ rounds, which means a feeling out round(s) where most UFC fighters start out strong, so one of the intangibles is are you pitting against a quick start boxer,.

Too many to argue — I would rather just see which UFC fighter will challenge Mayweather to end all this debate

Depending on how skilled the fighter is. You have to remember that the majority of boxer trained in other full contact sports and Martial Arts. So, can highly trained boxer bet a MMA fighter. Depends on his experience….
