Your more prone to be injured playing other sports because the referee stops the fight before someone gets seriously hurt. Bruises and cuts are not injuries buddy. And you will recover from knock outs but that is why refs are there to call a KO before it gets real bad. Say you play soccer, sprained ankles and such are injuries. Therefore, your more prone to be hurt playing soccer.

Paintball is also considered a very safe sport. Why? the only injuries you get are from people running/falling into things. Rules are there for your safety and the sport of the game. Bruises are nothing, get over it.

EDIT;

whoa guys, seriously. there shouldn’t be this much debate. fighting is DANGEROUS. mma is a SPORT. understand the difference? if you can’t play a sport by the rules, your going to be HURT. random injuries occur but they are prevented by proper TRAINING. if you don’t want to tap than that is your problem for being stupid. if you don’t know how to defend yourself in MMA, it would not be the ref’s fault completely, if you got hurt.

so in summary, mma fighting is considered safe because it is CONTROLLED.

Who are these “people”? Maybe fighters will say that it is safe to promote the sport, and football players will tell you football is safer, or vice versa. I think it all depends on the practitioners training. Some people can fight and others can play football.

Because they are jaded. Statistics would be the only way to truly define to some degree which is safer. Sadly for those saying MMA’s safer, they will find out it’s not.

EDIT-

Both sports show similar ratios of overall injuries, minus cuts and abrasions, for 100,000 hours of play/fight time. Though in this study it shows that basketball actually has more injuries than football, as 10-50% higher rate than wrestling and boxing, and MMA has 65% more injuries than wrestling.

Football and Ice Hockey both ranked highest in the ratio of concussion type injuries across the board, where as wrestling and martial arts ranked higher in lower body extremity injuries.

So, it is in my opinion that based on the research I’ve read that MMA is no safer, but it is also no more dangerous. The following is the statistical study of emergency room visit – related injuries to football, basketball, boxing, martial arts, wrestling, and mma as a comparative study.

With the addition of this study by the Nevada State Athletic Commission I would have to agree with my previous statement though it could be agrued incorrect as the results of this study showed a much higher injury rate specifically associated with MMA.

The study was of 171 matches with 220 fighters, all male. The study showed a total of 96 injuries to 78 fighters. Of the 171 matches 69% ended with an injury to at least one fighter.

This study also shows that the injury rate rose from 2003-2005 approx 3% and is continuing to do so among professional athletes.

“The incidence of injury in these fighters may have been higher than reported. Although the study included all MMA fights throughout a 40 month period, the total number of matches was relatively small. Third, the fights included in this study were all held in Nevada, the premiere site for MMA events. How injury rates would change for events held under different conditions with less supervision is a matter of concern. Finally, for the purpose of discussion, knockouts and technical knockouts were not defined as injuries although many would argue that these represent the most serious of all boxing injuries. Due to the sometimes subtle nature of traumatic brain injury—and since there was no radiographic imaging available to verify whether an injury had occurred—KOs and TKOs were discussed as separate entities and not included in the Injury in mixed martial arts competitions 141 overall injury data. Further research is needed to determine the true nature of these injuries and their cumulative effects upon the individual fighters.

KEY POINTS
• Mixed martial arts (MMA) has changed since
the first MMA matches in the United States
and now has increased safety regulations and
sanctioning.
• MMA competitions have an overall high rate
of injury.
• There have been no MMA deaths in the
United States.
• The knockout (KO) rate in MMA appears to
be lower than the KO rate of boxing matches.
• MMA must continue to be supervised by
properly trained medical professionals and
referees to ensure fighter safety in the future.”

EDIT- for the record to that guy way down at the bottom. I am not against MMA. Just the attitude that some have and the crowing lack of civility in the US because of impressionable children getting the wrong idea. I personally enjoy watching the big matches.

Street fighting is dangerous, self defense even more so. A street fight has no rules, and there may be no one to stop a person from continuing after their opponent is out. Self defense is pure survival.

Overall MMA is safer then say football, but remember it is done inside a ring with rules and a ref. Fighting ouside a ring is violent and stupid.

Paul G January 16, 2010 at 01:08

I don’t know if to call it safer however, it is performed under a more controlled environment.

I mean if you fight on the street and someone really hurts you, he’ll stop kicking your ass ’til he’s fed up (god knoes how long could that take). In MMA, if the referee feels your at risk of serious injury, he’ll stop the fight and you’ll be attended by paramedics and stuff.

well fighting is very dangerous because its normall on a hard suface and people can have weapons etc. fighting doesnt have any rules and no gloves or anythign like that plus normally fighting the poeple who are fighting arent trained.

in MMA people are trained to avoid being hit to badly they also wear gloves and there are rules for safety.
sure u can still hit as hard but they wont pull out a knife and stab you.

kempo_jujitsu77 January 16, 2010 at 01:51

katana is right.

in the cage/ring, there is protective gear. there are rules, theres a referee, there are no multiple attackers, theres a mat, theres no weapons involved. and most importantly two things. 1 the ref stops the fight. and 2 those guys know when to tap out.

one more thing. the statistics speak for themselves. during the olympics i saw a guy get hit with a pitch and get a concussion. you have severe injuries all the time in football. they are really quite rare in mma.

James S January 16, 2010 at 02:43

Well lets look at football. In football you have a 350lb guy trying to run full speed and knock you down. Thats alot of force and potenial for injury. In Cage fighting your trying to win by a strike of submission. Fights are thought through and most of the time no one gets hurt.

Stuart F January 16, 2010 at 02:45

This argument comes up when people who are against mma fights say it is barbaric/violent/dangerous.
Unlike in boxing you don’t get a standing 8 count to get beat up some more and sustain more head trauma.
Another statistic is that there have been no deaths in the US in MMA fights. If you take that as the standard of regulation so we aren’t talking about unsanctioned fights then very few sports could claim that.
People have died playing soccer and skiing, in motor racing and that is why it is claimed to be safer.
