I don’t think their is a specific martial art you need but generally fighters have trained in mixed martial arts usually including muay thai and kickboxing or brazillian jujitsu and kickboxing.

Today’s MMA fighters are starting to get more diverse in each area of the sport.

Wrestling, BJJ, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing, Karate (amongst others) are all forms of martial arts that you must know to be a good MMA fighter. Now this doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be diverse in all, at least offensively. Knowing how to protrect yourself from these forms and defense from these arts is just as important. For instance good submission defense if you are a primary striker is just as important as knowing how to sink submissions yourself.

Become as good as you can in your Art, but get to know them all. Guys like GSP, and Anderson Silva are dominant because they are diverse.

There is at least one guy in the UFC, Machida, who does Karate, but I think he may be one of the only guys doing it. He rocks though. You need to be very skilled in mixed martial arts, brazillian jiu jitzu is massively important.

Check the skill sets of some of your favorite fighters on UFC.com and see what they do, their workout regimen, etc.

you have to be good in everything, kickboxing, wrestling, ground fighting. As for martial arts to train in for mma i’d say Muay Thai, Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. but if you can bring techniques from other styles, and make them work in real combat, and mix them into your mma then use them.

You’ll have to train quit a bit. And get some experience and realistic training. Not to mention whatever training you do, make it as close to the real thing as possible, without injuries of course.

You’ll have to learn and learn to keep learning constantly and whatever you don’t know how to fight against your gonna need to learn to fight it.

Getting to the point where you can do things naturally and without thinking will be very important. This will allow you to react accordingly with speed.

Wrestling, boxing, BJJ, Karate, TKD, Muay Thai, and kickboxing are just a few of the styles being used in the sport now. But you’ll have to tailor them to the sport accordingly. Lyoto Machida for example stated himself that his karate was tailored to the sport.

There is so much to learn it’s too much for me to explain on this forum but I hope this gives you an idea of what you have to do.

It’s a huge commitment. So the most important question here is, do you have the determination and commitment to do what it takes?

Your young so you can still get a good start but your gonna have to dig and see if this is something you truely want.

Some form of grappling is a must — Judo, BJJ, Wrestling, Sambo.

You pretty much need a little bit of everything. But the very core, important ones that you will need to be very good at would be: Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (any type is fine, as long as it is wrestling based)..This would be for your ground game. You will learn various chokes, controlling positions, armbars, leg/knee/ankle locks, triangle chokes, and much more. You may also need Judo to be skilled in takedowns and throws, however the most basic takedowns used in UFC today are just the basics (double leg takedown, back leg sweep, simple stuff)…So Judo is not a priority. You need to keep doing your kickboxing and possibly the Karate. Muay Thai would also be an excellent choice because you need to master the clinch. You need to know how to get your opponent in a clinch, throw knees and elbows from the clinch, and know how to defend yourself and work from the clinch. If you cannot take separate classes for these Martial Arts, if you can find one, an MMA school will do you just as good. I can say this, because I take an MMA class, that puts everything together. It is excellent. Other than that, these would be the most important ones to learn. Also, you may want to look into a separate Strength/Conditioning class. This will greatly help you succeed.

Hope this helps, good luck!

All you need to know if kyokushin karate and Judo-that’s it…don’t concern yourself wiht the others-otherwise you will be just another cookie cutter UFC fighter…good luck

Its not cut in stone that you need to train in any specific art!
By looking at what you currently train in, I’d say that you really need a ground game. Continue karate and kickboxing, just do some ground work (jits). What ever you choose, make sure you are sincere and train hard!
