Im MMA fighting a guy much taller guy, what takedown would work best?

by MasterBlaster on May 23, 2010

Since hes taller, hes got longer reach, Hes a tall, skinny, lanky bastard who thinks he can take me. Im a average height, solid body type. I lift weights so I hit pretty hard. I think ill be fine in the stand up and ground work, I just dont know what takedown I should use on him.

Doubt this for an actual MMA fight LOL, but any shot would work well, but since hes a tall lanky bastard, a single leg shold be effective at keeping him off balance. Hit up youtube and check out some tutorials.

Tall guys have a lot of leverage on their sprawls, so I prefer clinch. Do whatever you’re most confident doing. Trips (inside and outside leg trips), as well as throws usually work best for me.

Also lifting weights has little to do with striking strength in beginners. You’d be surprised at how hard a flyweight can hit you. It’s all in the kinetic chain and hip movement. Much more form than muscle mass.

If you’re confident about your stand-up, you should stay standing. If, for some reason, you feel like you have to take him down I would feint a punch or a combo to make his arms come up to cover his face and then shoot in for a double-leg take-down. It is true that taller guys can have a lot of leverage on their sprawls. This is why feinting punches to set up the take-down is so important. Feinting the punches will not only get his arms out of your way for your double-leg take-down, but it also leave him basically flat footed (he’ll have to make a strong base with his legs becuase he’s expecting to block your stikes).

I personally think the double-leg is better than a single-leg against a tall guy becuase a tall guy’s hips (and, therefore, center of gravity) are naturally high so they’re easier to knock off balance with a hard tackle/double-leg take-down than a shorter guy. Also, picking up a single-leg of a tall guy doesn’t get them off-balance too much becuase again, their hips are high, so their raised leg can easily and comfortably bend at the hip (their two legs would probably be at a 90 degree angle with one another, or less) while they hop around on their other foot and try to punch you in the face. This is something a short guy can’t do as easily becuase their raised leg would be bending at an uncomfortable angle above their hip (their two legs would probably be at more than a 90 degree angle with one another).

Or, to completely avoid the possiblity of a sprawl, get inside, throw a punch to the head to make him cover up, and then bear-hug him right to the ground. Wrap your arms around his waist and then squeeze until he buckles to the ground. The advantage of this is that you’ll end up in a full-mount position and can start ground-and-pounding him or work for a submission.

Avoid leg attacks. No one wants a knee to the face while they are shooting for a double. Clinch work is where you live. Take away his reach. Get inside position with a Thai Boxing clinch if possible. Attack his abdomen with punches and knees to weaken his core and work snap downs along with knees to the head (you can throw a few elbows in there, too). I never like attempting risky take downs that can put me in bad position in street fights against lanky guys. If you can get his head under yours just sprawl to get him down (or guillotine if u feel like it and pull guard), pound away at his head, and then circle to take his back. Finish with a choke or just punch away.

MMA fight is not fighting without thinking, even thought you have a perfect body as you said. but lack of strategy, your strength can’t do anything in a small guy with experienced well in MMA.

in MMA more important is you have a unique strategy to takedown your enemy. with force and endurance to fight.

well your probely a lot strong than him if he lanky. so nearly any take down will work as long as you get streght into it eg double leg takedown

Work your double and single leg takedowns. Watch out for his knees!
