They all kept fighting back-to-back until everybody was eliminated.

Yep it was basically tournament held all in one night. No time limit either. Some fights could last as long as 40 minutes. Maybe longer! However you just won the tournament. Belts weren’t introduced until after the tournament system I believe.

Yes. In the beginning they used a single 8 man elimination tournament at UFC 1. This meant you had to win three fights in one night to win the tournament. At UFC 2 it was a 16 man tournament and Royce Gracie actually fought four times in one night to win. This continued on for some time before the tournament format was eliminated. Slowly over the years, and mostly when bought by Zuffa, the UFC turned more and more into a sport so now a fighter only has to fight once per event.

Yes. Many of the early UFC’s had a tournament format, as did other events in Brazil, Russia, Japan, and elsewhere. In fact, I believe Ricardo Morais won five matches in one night in Russia back in the day, a feat I don’t think has been repeated. But yes, the first eight UFC’s were in tournament format, as were a few others afterwords.
