Is 42 too old to learn MMA fighting?

by MasterBlaster on May 15, 2010

I am 42 years old, and I want to train for and fight MMA. I realize that I have limitations on what I can achieve because of my age. But I think that it would be fun to compete and challenge myself. It would also be the best way for me to learn how to fight and defend myself because I believe that the best way to learn anything is actually by doing it. Is there a place for me in MMA.

as long as your physically able to do it, you can.
you might have some limitations but don’t get discouraged by your age.
theres plenty of mma fighters your age like randy couture and ken shamrock

I think if you really want to do it then you should do it. You kinda waited a while to learn to defend your self though lol Did you recently make some enemies? But the point is, you want to do it so you should. Nothing should hold you back from it. Theres always gotta be fun no matter what.

you can practice moves, but wouldn’t recommend fighting for the sport of it

ofcource man , on the blue mat we welcome anyone , of any age. Some guys your age who come in get discouraged after being beat by like guys in their 20s , but if you don’t have any ego problems and are willing to learn along with the rest of us, then you will improve and make friends. One of our mma instructors at my gym is 55 years old , and is in such ridiculous shape, he is stronger than most of us. I even think you can fight local shows and stuff if you train hard , and stay focus. I think a guy who trains mma full on for 2-3 years is allot better than someone who trains mma half ass for 10 years. Go for it man , your 40 not dead.

If you mean too old for real MMA, yeah, you’re way past prime. However, if you mean for pleasure, personal challenge, & personal goal, nope, you’re not too old. It’s a great exercise and it’s good for your health. Make sure you got good health insurance in case of injury. I am 28 yrs old brown belt student and I train intensity, gave everything I got. I get hurt once in a while. Good luck.

You can train it, yes, and probably fight on a local level. I don’t want to be discouraging, just realistic: starting this late means you’ll probably never make a living out of it. However, learning MMA is a blast. I know guys who just love to train, with no thought of competition. Or do competition just for fun. So I would definitely encourage you to go train it, as long as you keep your expectations realistic. But it seems like you’ve got a really good attitude so far. I think you’ll be fine.

theres a guy here in my state who like 45 or 46 who’s fighting just started about a year or so ago he’s having fun and loves it, Skip Hall fought at 62, if you really wanna do it go for it, you don’t wanna wake up 10+ years from now saying I wish I would have, wouldn’t you rather wake up 10+ years from now and say I did it?

i think someone told me about a guy who trained in mma and he was 56 or something. yes you can, do it, its all about your heart. as long as you train and be careful just like everyone else then yes i think you can. God bless

Of coarse, in my MMA gym there’s a few people in there 40′s most of us are in our teens or late 20′s early 30′s. but,if you can take a hit,or get slammed,go for it.
