Its because he is more effective in the clinch then on the ground….
You need to understand Judo well before understanding Karo, he is a great technician and thinking you can just take a few months under him you can throw like him is not the way it works. It literally takes years to get the proper posture and balance to get even close to his throws.

ive heard the exact opposite about him teaching class. he used to teach at next generation and from what i hear he confused the shit out of people. i personally wouldn’t know it was before my time but, the vast consensus seems to think he was terrible.

I luv seeing judo throws during MMA fights, they’re always exciting and unexpected. Karo, Fedor, Aoki, Akiyama, Mousassi, Okami, they all do sick throws in their fights. It’s funny cuz Anderson Silva who is my favorite fighter is a black belt in Judo but he doesn’t do throws in the clinch, he basically goes straight to Muay Thai mode and knees the guy in the head
