He technically is Brazilian but his heritage and main style is Japanese! But Brazil has produced amazing MMA fighters! I am glad that Canada has someone to be proud of as well :P

u do realise that theres different schools of Shotokan that do full contact and practice the fighting applications of it and not just train in katas and point sparring they actualy train properly as its supposed to be its just that Shotokan has been watered down

pitbull103 June 1, 2010 at 17:53

One of the reasons he is so good is that he has expanded beyond the confines of shotokan. There is a reason that few in MMA have a shotokan base. I went to brown belt as a shotokan student, and it is not relevant to actual fighting. Point fighting yes, but not full contact with takedowns. You must be mixed, and Machida is definitely a mixed martial artist. His unique traditional background is a help. It’s almost as if he coaxes his opponents into a point fight. Incredible fighter.

baihbalm June 1, 2010 at 22:52

Japanese and Portuguese, and a funny style of English ever since he called Tito a Cheeto!

freshboi89 June 1, 2010 at 23:34

Does Lyoto speak both Japanese and Portugese?

kiddtaak June 1, 2010 at 23:41

Lyoto is the man one of the best MMA fighters out there. Since his father is from Japan does Lyoto even speak Japanese?

Mehdoozi June 1, 2010 at 23:49

The difference between the best and the good is Spirit-Strategy… Look at Silva, Fedor, Machida.

MarcosMarchesini June 2, 2010 at 00:36

Lyoto is the revenge of Karate, after all these years that Muay Thai and Kickboxing ruled in MMA, Lyoto proved that Karate have a value, OSS!

disbejorge June 2, 2010 at 01:26

Damn, I am a fan of Lyoto AND Rashad. For the first time, I’m actually unsure of who to pick as a potential winner…. Lyoto has unsurpassed strategies and technique and Rashad has ridiculous speed and KO power… jeez..

44cansosteel June 2, 2010 at 02:02

Lyoto looked bigger and stronger than ever and was still light on his feet at UFC 94. Lyoto has all the tools to beat all the other top 10 light-heavyweight fighters

magician234 June 2, 2010 at 02:02

Machida finally gets his shot at Evans in 05/23/09..Cant wait to see what happens.
