It certainly is martial arts ! Martial arts at the next level. I have been a practitioner for many years but never got involved in serious competition. Unless you have yourself a lot of experience with the fighting game, you cannot assess what you see in the octagon. Anybody who thinks it is just a brawl or even a “sport” would get smacked in no time should he step in. Those guys know what they are doing beyond what non-practitioners will ever imagine. There’s well thought of strategy involved and what one sees as a “dull” fight is actually full of technical subtleties.

Its a sport like wushu, because it’s not just one thing, it encompasses things from TKD, BJJ, muay Thai, and countless others.

The meaning of MMA has changed over the years. At first you had fighters trained in one martial art fighting other fighters trained in another art . Therefore it became a mixed martial art tournament as opposed to a Karate, Judo, Kung Fu, BJJ tournament. As rules were introduced fighters realised the need to cross train and used a mixture of martial arts, Muay Thai, BJJ etc. The modern fights under the new rules are sport contests that utilise different martial arts techniques. MMA is not a style in itself but a mixture of techniques that are effective under the given rules

I have answered this question a fair few times so apologies for not going into lots of detail.

It is a sport, plain and simple.

It started out with people who had studied seperate arts for a long time, mastered them and came together to train and fight.

But that was a long long time ago.

Now it is full of people who have NEVER studied a martial art, they have just trained in ‘MMA’ for a couple of yeras before there first fight. That is not an art. It is a sport.
