Strikeforce Middleweight Champ Jake Shields Wants to Fight Dan Henderson

by MasterBlaster on April 9, 2010

Karyn Bryant caught up with Jake Shields at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Torrance, CA. The Strikeforce Middleweight Champ expressed his desire to fight newly signed Dan Henderson (former UFC and Pride champion); explaining he’d remain at the heavier weight for the opportunity. Jake holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, under Cesar Gracie. Dan is a two-time Olympic wrestler. This would surely make for a great fight. ### 3/1/2010 Update: It’s official. Jake Shields will fight Dan Henderson on the 4/17 STRIKEFORCE main event, live on CBS. The card will also include Gegard Mousasi vs King Mo.

@1969bearcat bullshit

Bulldog0595 April 9, 2010 at 18:51

Shields has a chance because Hendo has peaked and SHields is at the top of his game. A prime Hendo would smash Shields in no time. Should be a good fight and the smarter fighter will win.

Jake Shields is gonna be in some fucking trouble

Kdaddy61987 April 9, 2010 at 19:21

I agree with everyone that dan will pound jake. Lets be honest jake shields definatly didnt beat okami in there fight so saying his ground game is good is fine but it isnt great and i think jake loss to condit too. Jake shields the most overhyped fighter in mma.

gthletic1 April 9, 2010 at 19:26

dan is one of the toughest MMA fighters alongside Rampage. ive never seen hendo in a fight where he was non competitive, one of the few guys who can say that

lilsm555 April 9, 2010 at 20:21

They didnt cut dan henderson he left all on his own…He wanted more money and he doesnt really sell seats so they said no and he left

2LIVESTOLIVE April 9, 2010 at 21:21

Dan is cool and tough, Shields is boring and incomplete. Dan wins

FunkMastaMegaFlex April 9, 2010 at 21:38

Jake better bring his best Shields! Because Hendo is gonna break most of them. I see Dan winning this one by UD or maybe TKO. However, don’t count anybody out, and certainly not Shields. The guy hasn’t lost in 6 years, and he is in amazing shape. He is also much younger than Hendo and this is gonna be a 5 rounder, which Dan hasn’t fought in a while. Its gonna be great regardless of how it ends.

Dana told Hendo that he “doesn’t deserve the pay of a top athlete” because he isn’t as popular to all the new fans as he is known to all us hardcore fans. Hendo is and will always be my favorite fighter for numerous reasons, but it’s hard to believe that all these new mma bandwagon jumpers never heard of him until he signed with the UFC after Pride was sold. Shocking to me…

Hendo is going to annihilate Jake Shields. He has too much strength for him. He will get knocked out or pounded out. I would love to see Hendo fight Mousasi…now that would be really interesting…

snide95 April 9, 2010 at 23:22

I can’t believe the ufc cut dan after he fucked up bisping, I guess they don’t want the best fighters

callofdutymw2geek April 10, 2010 at 00:16

Dan is a class ahead of shields.

mixmaster2669 April 10, 2010 at 00:49

Hendo just won 3 tough fights in the UFC, a close decision lose to Rampage and a fight where he dominated the first round against Silva.
Dan is still in his prime. Ranked # 2 MW and # 4 LHW.
Shields fought his entire career at 170lbs until 7 months ago when he went up 15lbs and fought consensus Top 5 MW Robbie Lawler.

Shields will be a big underdog, but he steps up and takes risks. I like both guys, but i will root for Jake in this one just for going against the odds again.

Bulldog0595 April 10, 2010 at 00:52

Even though Hendo is not in his prime..he is still a force to be reckoned with. I think Shields will get beat up.

bascorasco April 10, 2010 at 01:18

death wish

Chewinupbabies April 10, 2010 at 01:54

At least Jake Shields steps up like a man, and takes the toughest fight he can find. Unlike dumbass Frank Shamrock, talking all kinds of shit about Jake Shields putting him down and everything, but Shamrock refuses to fight Shields, and his excuse was “he’s a boring fighter” Yeah right. Shamrock is just scared to fight anyone from Team Gracie since he got his ass beat the fuck up by Diaz.

Millers hands are on the SIDE of Shields head, Shields has his chin pressed far down on his chest. Miller crushing hard on low chin

You need one arm under the chin on the throat and the other arm or at least hand behind the head to finish.
His corner yelled 9 seconds Shields held on to Millers hands “relaxed an waited” When the bell rang he jumped to his feet. Went to his corner.
If the choke was on 4-5 sec’s your out cold, if a near choke you need help getting up. Check video, not close.

nutty2223 April 10, 2010 at 02:45

many people consider shields a top 3 welterweight and a top ten middle weight so i wouldnt exactly call him “low level compition..”

nutty2223 April 10, 2010 at 03:27

hey people lets not knock miller if u have sumthin bad 2 say about jake shields dont bring miller into…cuz honestly miller wuz about 4 more seconds from puttin shields 2 SLEEP in that rear naked choke lol

1969bearcat April 10, 2010 at 03:59

Yeah, JAKE TAKES FIGHTS and I want to see him and Henderson. But there will be a huge weight disadvantage for Shields, its the last fight on his welterweight contract.
He should do what he said he was going to do after the Miller fight, fight his next fight at welterweight. Then be a free agent on a 14 fight win streak who is ranked in 2 weight classes.
He could get a good contract to fight at his natural weight.
Fighters have short careers, he is a single father, do what is good for Jake.

mixmaster2669 April 10, 2010 at 04:41

Jake will be a big underdog. He was a big underdog against Lawler, but not as much as vs Hendo, who “prefers fighting at LHW.”
It will even be worse odds than when he fought Sakurai.
One reason I like Shields, he could have fought a welterweight ranked 47th, but he choose # 4 ranked MW Lawler.
Asked if he was geting more pay for fighting Lawler, he said ” no it is all still under my WW contract, its just a more compelling fight”
Jake may lose, but he TOOK the fight. And ya never know.

tanglestrangle April 10, 2010 at 04:57

Dan won’t be” fighting to survive” like Miller.

Same way he went the distance with Jacare, hold on, use the grappling skills he has to tie up the opponent, never try anything, might leave you open.
Miller as any grappler can tell you TURNED what COULD HAVE BEEN a Real Battle into something less.
Jake Shields came to win, he took risks, showed why he finished his last 8 fights before Miller. There are NO ELBOWS in Strikeforce, need a lot of space to do damage with punches, gives miller room.

Leglock101 April 10, 2010 at 05:02

No, Dan could not strike a deal with UFC, not his fault, Even white said “I took more and more off of the table”, Why? because he did not want to pay hendo, He is far from a loser considering he is the only person in UFC to give A. Silva a run for his money, you should change your name from NEWFIE to NEWBIE, considering that is what you seem to be as far as MMA goes.

Newfie4646 April 10, 2010 at 05:24

dan is a loser, hes content to fight low level compition

charizard11z April 10, 2010 at 06:22

how would this be for the CBS card?

Fedor vs Werdum
Henderson vs Shields
Melendez vs Aoki
Cyborg vs who gives a fuck
Miller vs Jacarce
