The UFC hit Los Angeles on Saturday, October 24 for UFC 104 at The Staples Center and the fighters put on a solid night of action. The pay per view started with welterweights Anthony Johnson and a veryoverwhelmed Yoshiyuki Yoshida battling it out and it took one 39 seconds before the relentless punches of Johnson put his opponent down and brought the ref in to stop it.
In the lightweight division, Joe Stevenson and Spencer Fisher had a great fight which saw a rejuvenated Stevenson in his second fight training under Greg Jackson really pushing the action and trying to get the fight to the ground where he would have a solid advantage. Fisher looked good as he manged to stop a few take down attempts. They were wrestling against the cage as round 1 wore on and the ref stepped in to restart in the center. Stevenson charged for a take down and the two scrambled for a bit before Fisher went down and the round came to a close as he was eating some punches. It took a good part of round 2 before Stevenson got his opponent in the crucifix position on the ground and started dropping elbows into his face until the ref called an end to the fight giving Stevenson the win.
In another lightweight contest, Josh Neer took on Gleison Tibau in a match that was marked by wild take downs and both fighters running out of gas in the second round. Tibau was on fire in the first round, taking his opponent down with crazy take downs that turned into hard slams in the air. Tibau kept the strategy going through all 3 rounds, even as both men became visibly exhausted and he won a unanimous decision.
The co main event saw heavyweight Cain Velasquez take on the very experienced and much larger Ben Rothwell and really show what he is made of. Velasquez took Rothwell down with ease in the first round and proceeded to deliver a barrage of big hard punches and the ref was close to stopping the fight several times. The second round started where the first left off asRothwell missed a big head kick and Velasquez grabbed a leg, took him down and started raining punches down again. As they were against the cage, Velasquez was delivering solid shots to the face asRothwell was trying to stand up, but finally the ref had enough and stopped the fight. It was a controversial stoppage but the fight was so one sided it really made no difference.
The Main event saw undefeated champion Lyoto Machida, who has never lost a round in the UFC, take on Mauricio “Shogun” Rua who became the first guy to give the champion problems and in the yes of the crowd, UFC president Dana White and most people watching, he should have won the decision. After 5 hard fought rounds where Rua delivered heavy leg and body kicks to the champion, all 3 judges scored it 3 round to 2 for the champion and Lyoto Machide remained undefeated and kept his belt. In the post fight press conference, Dana White said a rematch will be worked out.
