GOOD QUESTION…
BUT I THINK IT’S BOTH…

Eric C January 4, 2011 at 17:45

It’s a “real sport” in the same way that boxing, olympic wrestling, karate (or other martial art competitions), kickboxing, etc. are sports.

Both

I think UFC needs to exist to show the skill in other fighting disciplines such as boxing. UFC – this is what happens when there aren’t any rules….and it sucks.

This is not a sport its more like Human Bloodsport. Before long it will be fights to the death. These are caged animals that will stop at nothing.

nathania January 4, 2011 at 19:46

a real bloodsport.. sometimes could be a reason to brawl especially to release the fury!

i look at it as a sport…it’s competitive, and personally I love it!

Erika L January 4, 2011 at 21:03

of corse it is a sprot it is the best sport in the whole wide world besides hockey!

Adam K January 4, 2011 at 22:00

its a real sport, very competitive, full of adrenaline, and brings alot of viewers, and competitors. you do have to be professional to compete like that.

You must be a WWE fan…or a boxing fan.

It’s as real a sport as any other human endeavor that requires a man or woman to commit to years of physical training, self sacrifice, and discipline. Well, any one except for combat, that isn’t exactly a sport.

This is a joke…Caged animals? Fight to the death? Bloodbath?
These are the people that are so smart that they close their minds to what they dont understand…
To be in MMA, and successful at that, theres no description to accurrately convey the amount of hard work, skill, concentration and sacrifice it takes…not to mention the toll it takes to do this mentally…
For some reason i turned on ESPN 2 the other day…you know….that sporting network?? And they had 2 out of shape dudes decked out in bionic commando camo hunting turkeys…..
We live in a world where men can shoot animals from hundreds of meters away when they dont even need to feed their family and we call that sport…sneaking around bushes and trees to sneek up and cheapshot a deer in the neck…cool man.
Martial Artists that lay their minds, bodies and lives on the line in the most physically demanding enviornment would constitute a sport…not to mention they are actual athletes!!!!
Last question about this brawling and brutal sport – Think about ACL tears, deaths from heat exhaustion, and paralyzing spinal and neck injuries; where do you see more? Football or MMA???
UFC and mixed martial arts is true to their catchphrase “as real as it gets”….

Justine January 5, 2011 at 00:51

It’s a real sport.
There’s too much dedication in it to just be “a reason to brawl”.

Mataleon January 5, 2011 at 01:07

UFC is not a sport its a company first of all. the sport is MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) UFC is just a company that promotes the sport and their brand is UFC. It has Olympic Level athletes for those uneducated in the sport that represent the sports of Judo, Greco Roman and Freestyle wrestling. There are MANY rules set in place to protect the fighters, if you do a google search you will find them. MMA has fewrer injuries than High School football. Boxing is only one of the arts practiced with skill in MMA. Its funny that MMA fighters are willing to go against a boxer under boxing rules, but boxers say No way to an MMA fight. Both are great but they are different.

its really fun to watch :D , but i think our human instinct is to see like barbarism and stuff like that, releases my anger just watching someone get kicked in the head :D , but ufc has also been described as human chicken fights lol.ufc fighter vs chicken? lol its ultimate fighting championship not ultimate fighting chicken!lol ben the hen vs matt hughes.
probably go for ben the hen…

MMA is as much a sport as Boxing just not that dirty yet. It takes skills, athleticism, strength, endurance to be a sport. MMA does all of this. Its definitely not just a reason to brawl. To think so and continue to believe so, is just being flat out ignorant.

I Hate Lazy People January 5, 2011 at 02:29

It is definitely a real sport. The dedication and training necessary to become a pro MMA fighter is tremendous. True, there are some people that use it as an excuse to brawl, but there are the same type of people in boxing too at the amateur level.

Anyway, some people have voiced opinions here that say that MMA has “no rules”. In response to them, I present, straight from the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board:

The Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts.
http://www.state.nj.us/lps/sacb/docs/martial.html

As for the contention of some of the other boxing purists who think that MMA will eventually end in fights to the death, I would like to point out that 1) there has been exactly one death after a sanctioned MMA fight in history, and 2) that MMA has actually become tamer as time has passed. If you look at UFC 1 as opposed to MMA of today, it is a lot LESS brutal today than it was back then.

THE January 5, 2011 at 02:35

The best all around athletes in the world are MMA fighters (not just UFC, but Pride, etc.). Just based on this alone, how can we even make an argument about MMA not being a sport? These MMA fighters are overall better athletes than other professional athletes. MMA is a new sport, and there shouldn’t be any questions about its legitimacy IMHO.

Amanda January 5, 2011 at 02:54

if you watch the work and dedication put into training for the UFC (the sport is called MMA), you would know that answer quickly.

MMA is a mixture of several martial arts styles, mostly Briazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai anymore. it takes a lot of work to master the multiple arts involved in being good at MMA because it involves standup, takedowns, ground work, and submissions.

its a sport through and through, but sadly the popularity of the UFC has given a lot of people a negative view of the sport, and even worse it has given a lot of kids a incorrect view of what it takes to be an MMA fighter, its not just brawling.
