what are some reasons for a UFC fighter to loose his tittle?

by MasterBlaster on March 30, 2010

If a fighter in the UFC or MMA gains the tittle but loses it what are some reasons for that to happen like for example if he is accused of something criminal and is charged will he loose the tittle?
and what will happen to the tittle will it go back to the fighter that he won it from?
thanks for your answers they have really shed some light on my question but what about if the champion at the time is put into prison will the tittle be striped from him?

Well NOTHING will happen.

PROOF:

GSP illegally put vaseline on his body, a violation of the RULES
and it clearly effected BJ Penn when Penn attempted to go for the tri-angle choke, you could see Penns, feet just slipp all over GSP.
GSP and his trainer both acknowledge it.

NOTHING HAPPENED.

BJ Penn beat Matt Hughes for the Welterweight title in 04, BJ then left the company and was stripped of the title. The UFC then made the fight between Hughes and St-Pierre a title fight Hughes won and regained the title. Frank Mir defeated Tim Sylvia in 04 for the Heavyweight title, Mir was injured so they had an interim championship match which Andrei Arlovski won, later he was promoted to the undisputed champion when it became clear Mir wasn’t going to return anytime soon. Barnett was stripped of the Heavyweight title when he tested positive for steroids, so the made the Rico Rodrigues/Rand Couture fight a title fight.

Yes the title would be stripped under the conduct clause in their contract.

ADD) Depending of course on the severity and nature of the crime.

Shawn the muscle shark Sherk was stripped of the lightweight championship because he tested positive for steriods!

It wouldn’t go back to the fighter he won it from. There would be a fight between two top contenders for the vacant belt.

Yes. Fighters can have their titles stripped. I don’t know that it’s happened because a fighter broke the law (as there hasn’t been a champ who has broken the law). Fighters have been stripped of titles for positive steroid tests. This has happened to Josh Barnett, Sean Sherk and Tim Sylvia.

If I fighter is brought up on criminal charges, it is the choice of the organization(s) in which they hold titles to determine if their champion status should be revoked. Usually, if the charges would not result in serving any time, then they would probably be ignored, unless they were considered “humiliating” to the promotions public persona.

A fighter can also be stripped of his title if he/she is accused of cheating in any manner. This would usually come from steroid/drug use, or if the promotion decides to revoke a win (extremely rare, but it has happened) based on any given grounds put forth by an appealing party (to change the ruling of a fight, one party must submit a request for appeal to the promotion and/or sanctioning body).

In the case that a fighter does not lose their belt to a challenger, but is stripped of it, the belt would be considered open to challengers. The promotion may put on a single elimination tournament, or possibly match up the two strongest (or most promotable) contenders to claim the title.

Well, yes. If a fighter is unable to defend his title then the next ranked fighters will fight for the interim belt. That means they have the belt but didnt win it by beating the current champion. A few years ago, Frank Mir lost his belt when he was in a bad accident and was unable to defend the title. And there have been titles stripped because of steroid use. It is up to the UFC.

90% of the time, he loses it because he’s beaten by another fighter. There have been a few instances where a fighter tested positive for steroids or other illegal substances and gave up their belt, or were inactive for a long period of time (a year or more), and were stripped of their belt.

There have been no instances of a champion going to prison. However, I imagine he’d be stripped of the belt. Nobody wants a felon representing their company/sport.

face it the only way to lose in the title is for it to be beaten out of you mercielessly, knocked the conscios out of them or there limb broekd or went to sleepe because in the ufc theose are the only rules to winning and losing the octogan champoin
