What are the precautions in amateur boxing?

by MasterBlaster on May 6, 2010

I would like to sign up for boxing lessons, but my mom’s afraid that my brain’s going to get all jarred up and that I’ll have memory problems and stuff. Could anybody tell me what the precautions are?
I’ve boxed in a match at a Marine camp and did pretty good.

Stick and move!! Jab, jab! On a serious note, maybe you weren’t looking for precautions like wear a helmet or don’t get hit in the head, but instead for warnings or advice from other boxers. I’d say experiences are subject to great variations. Perhaps make a compromise and tell her you’d like to try it out for X amount of time to see if you have the reflexes for it. If you’re too slow, you will take a lot of blows, potentially to the head, and maybe you weren’t cut out for it and will agree to give up and avoid becoming a cabbage head.
