brazillian jujitsu’s probably the most helpful but if you don’t have a grounding in kickboxing or boxing , expect some injuries while you’re getting to the grapple. a good instructor will encourage you to learn from other sources , not just stick with what they teach.

well ju jitsu would be one..but if ya in the mma..these days just as much on there feet..so simple boxing skills ..kick boxing..plus many other forms of ground and standup fighting styles

Well this question is not one you can’t answer with just one definite style. But being a former mma competitor (back then it was called NHB or No Holds Barred) for me it was definitely wrestling. No other art out there can help more in positioning and controlling your opponent. Obviously you need your striking and submissions, which I would suggest you learn as well. But I can show you a choke and an arm bar and in about ten or fifteen minutes you could do it reasonably well. But controlling your opponent and just how to move your body and feeling how your opponent is going to move takes much longer. So get stared with your wrestling and work the rest in a little later. Because you if you can take your opponent down and control him you have won half the battle. GOOD LUCK!

there are three important ranges in mma fighting
standing-using striking to weaken or knock your opponent out
takedowns-being able to take your opponent to the ground and defend from being taken to the ground
ground fighting-being able to finish off your opponent on the ground via submission or gaining dominate positioning for ground and pound

heres a list of the more popular styles typically used in each range of fighting

standing: boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, kyokushin karate, san shou

takedowns:judo, freestyle and roman greco wrestling, muay thai allows clinching “neck wrestling”, san shou allows judo like throws, sport sambo

ground fighting: submissive wrestling, kosen judo, brazilian jiujitsu, freestyle sambo

Well boxing is a must. Then look into a grappling art. Try judo because it alone has more taekdowns and some ground fighting to get you by in a MMA fight. There are many other styles with different areas of skill in a fight. MMA style is a style which will change in the future. Look at the Begging of UFC and how Royce Gracie dominated the First two Championships until Ken Shamrock Broke his spirit and made him retire early in the UFC.Well any way The Twister Jui jitsu made by Eddie Bravo looks like it’s going to be the next best Martial art in the Future!

Take 2 styles, one to improve your striking (Boxing, Kickboxing, Karate, Taekwondo, etc) and one to improve your ground fighting. (Judo, Jujitsu, Wrestling, etc)

Choose one of these that you think will be the most fun for you and that you will be really good at.

wrestling- even though its boring in mma fights wrestlers win cause wrestling helps you control your opponent better than anyting else, there have been lots of guys who had less than a year of training in other discplines and did very well in mma, after all if you get mount or side control its not that difficult to catch an arm, or pound on someones head.

if you were thinking striking then boxing or muay thai (i think traditional kickboxing is over rated in mma)

BJJ and Muy Thai or Boxing

Gracie Jiu Jitsu. A modification of Jiu Jitsu, that allows smaller victims to defeat bigger and stronger opponents.

Royce Gracie won three championships back in the early days of UFC when nearly everything was allowed.

As for the poster who said Shamrock made Royce retire, I seemed to remember Royce making Shamrock tapout on his way to the championship.

The second time they fought resulted in a draw.

Royce had nothing more to prove and had accomplished what he was supposed to do: Establish the UFC and promote the dominance of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

So far his only losses are to the so called “Gracie Hunter” and Matt Hughes. Who also are well rounded in Jiu Jitsu and wrestling and much bigger and stronger.

Rickson Gracie eventually joined PRIDE and went undefeated well into his forties.

Two my knowledge Shamrock has never fought anyone bigger and stronger than him.

Anyway, learn Jiu Jitsu, especially Gracie style.
