by MasterBlaster on March 25, 2010

Just wondering if anyone recommends a particular brand products within that brand for hard training mma (jiu jitsu, kickboxing and general weights) reasons would be really appreciated.

Honestly you can do just fine without.

Most people take supplements for quicker recovery for training. Not because it actually makes you better at the actual sport itself.

For Pre-training, I usually go with Cytosport’s Fast Twitch.it’s about 70 calories per serving, with 15 grams of carbs. It has a bunch of crap to help your metabolism supposedly, and is supposed to help fast twitch fiber growth. Generally there are people far more scientific about it than I am. I know Fast Twitch helps me get through a workout with more energy, that I don’t gas out half way through. Mind you a lot of that probably has to do with the fact you drink half before, then another half during, and various caffeine type chemicals within it. But to me it does help. It has a form of creatine in it and it does help a good bit with recovery.

I am less scientific in regards to post workout protein. I go with fairly cheap brands ensuring that they are whey protein, relatively low in calories and very low in carbs. Since I normally drink protein at least twice a day that is somewhat important to me.

I take a good multivitamin, a good B-Complex, and that is about it.
I have tried Gensing, Fish Oil, Flax seed, and all that stuff. I haven’t noticed a difinitive difference with that stuff over a long period of time. I am constantly experimenting with some sort of supplement like this. So who knows.

Most of the guys I train with are about the same. Keep in mind supplements are expensive, for me to justify using something I have to see definitive results.

Most of the crap out there won’t really give you a major difference with or without it, a good preworkout drink like Stacker or something of that nature is good, ensuring you taking in something like Whey Protein or a fast absorbing protein post workout is what you need.

Don’t waste your time with anything more than 30grams of protein at a time as your body can’t metabolize more than that.

A good diet is pretty much all you really need.

Supplement wise most of it is gimmick, somethings help, somethings are just there because they sound great. For me, I want something I can see and feel a difference with, so most of the hype around things I tend to stay away from.

One thing I would keep away from if you truly plan on training for MMA, is anything that is “thermogenic” what this means is it raises your body’s core temperature to make you burn fat faster, and increase your metabolism. While this does help to a small degree, your chances of burning yourself out or causing a heat related injury are much higher and not really worth what gain you get from it.

You can go with a good diet eating at least 6 times a day and greatly increase your metabolism without taking something that makes you feel like a pig roasting even when it is snowing outside.

Good luck.

Creatine, whey protein, cytosport drinks, and vitamins… Healthy foods high in omega 3 and staying hydrated are key to successfull training.
