What is the best wrestling style for MMA?

by MasterBlaster on May 3, 2010

Those with a strong wrestling background, have been recently doing quite well in mixed martial arts. What classifies wrestling and is it the best sport to get someone ready for MMA?

THE BEST WRESTLING STYLE FOR MMA IS BRAZILIAN JU-JITSU.

Greco Roman or Freestyle wrestling are both equally good for MMA.

They are only ones in present-day MMA that are classified under the general banner of, “wrestling.”

It is a matter of opinion whether it is the best sport to get someone ready for MMA.

There are a lot of Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Sambo, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, etcetra fighters that would disagree wrestling is the best.

I would say that wrestling or brazillian jiu jitsu would be the two best for a base to start with. The strikers seem to have a harder time transitioning successfully in MMA. The grapplers tend to do really well even starting out. So, I think a grappling style is where you want to start.

You wouldn’t go wrong with a good background in wrestling. There are many fighters that come from wrestling backgrounds and do well in MMA. So, it can teach you a lot of useful skills.

Shoot wrestling by Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre has quick and effective takedowns. Catch Wrestling by Kazushi Sakuraba can put a beating on larger opponents through the use of underhooks and technique. He is the Rey Mysterio of MMA. Greco-Roman Wrestling by Randy Couture is overwhelming against strikers. MARK COLEMAN’S FREESTYLE WRESTLING COMBINED WITH GROUND AND POUND IS THE BEST IN MMA.

Depends what you want to learn, part of it is the work ethic in wrestling, so you would get that from any style.

Try whatever is near you and see if you like that class, you will do less sprawls & shoots in greco, which are widely used in MMA but you will do far more standing clinch in greco where you can work for take downs & use dirty boxing.

Wrestling is just one piece of becoming a successful fighter. Having a good wrestling background gets you ready for grappling and takedowns. But once you get to the ground, your wrestling is out the door and comes in the jiu jitsu training. Wrestling isn’t the best way to get someone wrestling for MMA because what if you go up against a guy with un matched stand up skills. You’ll be knocked out before you even get the chance to grapple. Wrestling does help but it’s not the best.
