Question by Jason: What is the UFC “Interim” Heavyweight Championship?
Can someone explain this to me? What is this title? How does it differ from the UFC Heavyweight championship?
Mir already beat Brock once so what does he have to prove in fighting him again?

It was created wen couture had a hiatus, taking the heavyweight title with him, but the title still had to be fought for, so they brought that in as he temporary belt, but mir vs brock is the unifying fight

Interim belts are for when the champion can not compete due to injury or something of the like. It’s typical that when the ‘real’ champ returns, he fights the guy who has the interim belt to unify them. So that’s why we’re going to see a 2nd Mir vs Lesnar bout.
The first fight wasn’t for a belt. It was also Lesnar’s first UFC fight, a lot of things have changed.
I think Mir has a really good shot at winning, even Brock’s strides have been great. Mir really impressed me in the Nog fight.
Randy Couture was the original holder of the belt. He raised a pay issue with UFC and at first refused to fight the remainder of the contract with UFC anymore and actually was essential to the formation of Affliction.
Dana was insistent that he would have Randy Couture fighting in UFC and defend his belt.
During that time though, UFC had a championship fight to fill the void and Nogueira beat Tim Sylvia for it in February 2008 as Tim Sylvia was the last holder of UFC heavyweight belt.
After the dispute got settled and Randy Couture agreed to fight the remainder of his contract, He faced Brock Lesnar for it and lost the belt to him.
The next month, Frank Mir fought Nogueira for the interim belt as part of the final for The Ultimate fighter reality show, in which Mir won the fight and hold the interim belt.
Frank Mir and Lesnar fight happened as part of contender fight to be the next in line to face Randy Couture so it doesn’t have anything to do with the championship holder.
The next logical step is of course the unification of the temporary belt holder (interim) since there should only be one belt holder. Hence the fight between Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar.
