Whats the difference between kickboxing, cage fighting or mma?

by MasterBlaster on April 5, 2010

I used to do kickboxing a few years ago nd was quite good at it so now i want to start again but i’ve been looking at cage fighting and mma as well. If you have any experience in them, which would you say is the best and why? They all give basically the same information (self defense and fitness). Thanks

kickboxing is just how it sounds boxing with kicks.

MMA is mixed martial arts- fighters are very well versed in kickboxing, muay thai, wrestling, jiu jitsu, ect ect.

Cage Fighting fighting is essentially the same as MMA.

the differences are these
kickboxing- involves kicking and punching pretty much the striking part of MMA (punches tend to be stylish but effective)
MMA- mixed martial arts are a combination of grappling and striking (example wrestling grappling and kickboxing striking)
cage fighting- is like MMA but is more street less experienced people just brawling

Kickboxing definition: the sport of combining technique and style of boxing with kicking. Kickboxing is a standing sport and does not allow continuation of the fight once a combatant has reached the ground.

Mixed Martial Arts: is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground.

MMA is commonly refered to as “cage fighting” because often times MMA combatants fight in a cage. However, not all MMA organizations use a cage.

Neither sport is “best”. “Best” is simply someone’s opinion. There are many reasons why kickboxing may be better that MMA, or why MMA may be better than kickboxing. Personally, I like MMA better. Here is why:

1. MMA allowed the use of many different martial arts
2. MMA is more pure, allowing more techniques to be used
3. MMA is becoming more popular than boxing or kickboxing around the world

I’m not saying MMA is better, I’m just saying I like it over kickboxing for those reasons, and many more.

Kickboxing is a sport fought in a ring, punches and kicks are allowed.

Cage fighting is a name given to MMA fights taken place in a cage.

MMA is a sport where you can strike or grapple, it’s done either in a cage or a ring.

“Cage fighting” is a colloquialism for MMA. It’s what people who don’t know a lot about MMA call an MMA fight. MMA can take place in either a ring or a cage.

Kickboxing doesn’t allow any grappling, while MMA permits all manner of throws, chokes, joint locks, pins, and reversals. They also use smaller gloves than kickboxing which have open palms and free fingers to facilitate grappling. There is generally no standing eight-count in MMA, nor is there a ten-count for a knocked down fighter. Often, strikes (mostly punches) are allowed on the ground in MMA. There is no time limit for how long fighters can stay in the clinch or on the ground in MMA, though they will be broken up and restarted if there isn’t enough action. Also, most MMA rounds are five minutes long, while kickboxing rounds are generally two or three minutes long.
