Question by caliguy_30: When did this ridiculous “mixed martial art” made it to be a legal martial art?
The growth of this UFC and all mixed martial art combat is nothing but a bunch of bologna. It looks like someone found a way to legitimize street fighting into becoming a martial art. There is absolutely no class and no martial art respect for a “sport” that calls on any shot’s allowed. It looks like two gorillas with no respect for their opponents going at each other. At least martial art has rules and always the respect of the opponent. Is violence really becoming what people look for?

If you want to convince people of your viewpoint, at least try not to do it in such obtuse, biased, narrow-minded,ignorant way.
Your statement only shows how little you know about mixed martial arts.
good luck!

Media hype…they made money with wrestling..from back in the early 50′s and in the 60′s it was all but a farce of a sport with hundreds of people glued to their black & whites to watch the fights at sunnyside gardens with Bruno San Martino and the Masked Marvel. Same swing just upgraded because of the Gracie families Brazilian Jujitsu. People with money just bumped it up a notch and expanded the Gracie work to this new lust for blood. I think it’s a shame as well and I’m 40 plus years in the martial art.
frank the tank just pwned you. and yes violence is always what people are looking for. have you ever been in school or on the street and a fight breaks out, just about every1 stops and watches to see someone get beat up. and MMA is a perfectly legitimate martial art because it is just mixing all the other martial arts…
All they have to do is ban the ground and pound so real skill is required to win .I believe that will eventually happen because people will get bored with it .Why pay to watch something you can see for free any saturday night at the local bucket of blood.
Seen altogether to many guys trying to apply an arm bar that is not going to work because of incorrect body posistion.Sad part is they dont know they are doing it wrong so the other guy escapes.Plus guys not taking advantage of their opponents bad posistion and it’s obvious one doesn’t know he is in a bad posistion and the other guy doesn’t know how to capitilize on it.
A guy with a black belt in striking arts and a black belt in grappling arts I would call a mixed martial artist but a guy who knows apparently a little about this and a little about that and a little about another thing knows just that very little .
Take out the ground and pound and the combatants skills will have to increase in order to win and some serious martial artists may get into it.
It’s not martial art.
Martial – means war, means it is effective in real life, means it is not a sport
Art – means that is is an art form, that it is functional and yet pleasing to see, it can sort of fit in here based on what your definition of art is
So it’s being art is a point of view, and it’s not martial.
It think they just knew that its real title wouldn’t sound as cool and wouldn’t sell as well. Mixed Fighting Sports.
It’s sports. Martial arts are intended to be used for either war or self defence only. It’s not martial arts.
And it does have shots that aren’t allowed, this is why it’s a sport and not true martial arts. Real martial arts has no rules.
First of all, Frank has taken the words out of my mouth.
I just want to add that you obviously haven’t watched any recent MMA, otherwise you would notice the respect that most fighters have for their opponents. 90% of MMA fighters have roots in traditional Martial Arts and bring the respect that they learn in those arts into the MMA arena. They even continue to contribute to their original arts. I’ve seen several UFC fighters at Judo tournaments that I’ve competed at, and have even had the chance to talk to them, and they are far from the animals that you are purporting them to be.
Most Mixed Martial Artists have the utmost respect for their opponents and show that in the ring.
Since you “claim” that there are no rules, you obviously have a horrendous lack of knowledge on the subject. Why don’t you do something that we like to call “Research” before you post your uninformed opinions.
By the way, I found this page after all of two seconds by doing a google search for “Rules of Mixed Martial Arts”
http://www.nj.gov/lps/sacb/docs/martial.html
Watch Anderson Silva and Rich Franklin hug and bow to each other after their match and THEN tell me MMA fighters are disrespectful.
Watch Rampage Jackson nearly go into tears because he was awarded an unfair win in one of his PRIDE matches, and offer the trophy to his opponent.
Do you see this in boxing? Do you see this in rugby? Do you see this in any other contact sport or ANY sport outside martial arts? No. You have assholes like Zinedine Zidane headbutting people and totally disregarding the rules of their sports. UFC is highly regulated by most state governments these days, and it’s not no-holds-barred. Personally, I think it’s great because it gets down to the true roots of martial arts- combat between two highly trained fighters.
What actual facts of mixed martial arts do you even know? Seriously, if you knew anything you would at least know that most fighters have tremendous amount of respect for their opponents. If it was “classes” like you say than Royce Gracie would not have participated and he is one the most respected martial artist in the world along with his family. UFC has many rules to protect their fighters so when you say ” any shots allowed” what exactly are you meaning? These fighters are extremely talented and put years of training into their careers. If you are going to have an opinion about mixed martial arts at least do some research first than make your opinion based on facts not by word of mouth or what you read in the newspaper
Aren’t real fighters the ones who don’t need rules anyway, since in a real fight there aren’t going to be any rules to bail you out or limit what your opponent can do. That’s why the average karate student would get slaughtered in a real fight, because they’re not used to taking pain. And it’s not that the ufc doesn’t have rules, it’s that they use actual force and aren’t simply playing point tag as in a martial arts tournament.

Hi there
You’re not the only one who thinks this way. I have always seen it as commercialized brawling. But people are entitled to their own views so let them enjoy it and leave them to get on with it.
As for MMA being a martial art. I’m not sure on that one either.
Is it skill? Is it just strength and male domination? Is BJJ and Thai Boxing the best combination since sliced bread?
Does it promote lack of respect between fighters? And are the shows responsible for promoting violence?
Opinions vary on all these points.
Each to their own.
But if this is the way forward for modern martial arts then i feel a great deal has been lost already.
Best wishes

Martial according to Webster’s dictionary is define as war like or war related. Kung fu, Karate, Savate, & Tae Kwon Do all started as a means to defend yourself in a street fight during the time era it was created. You just are one of the new generation martial artists from sport oriented schools called mcdojos. That don’t even know the history & legacy behind the art’s that made them win those medals, trophies, & belts. Don’t knock something even your style’s founders participated in themselves but with no rules & gloves to build the style’s reputation so you could study it. Check out You Tube they got videos of Carlson Gracie in the 20′s fighting Karate masters in Japan & Royce fighting in the 70′s in Judo tournaments in Japan also. MMA ain’t new it just got sanctioned so that those martial artist can prove what fighting style is superior without legal action.
