Brazil sure has a way with sports. They are known all over the world for their great soccer/football team and now, they are gaining popularity for a pool of boxers from boxing to Jiu-Jitsu and to the UFC! Today, they are preparing for one of the world’s great match-up in the UFC history and it pits two Brazilians in the middle of the UFC octagon: Anderson “The Spider” Silva and Demian Maia, both disciples and experts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and are very dangerous with their hands! It’s a good thing that they just set their sights on each other and not on us or else we will have our faces rearrange and pulverized us to smithereens! They are going to face this coming April 10 at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE and this event is dubbed as UFC 112: Silva vs Maia Fight! For sure, everyone must be already aware of this UFC event that is first-ever in UAE but does anyone really know something about these two Brazilian gladiators? Let’s take a look at who is Demian Maia, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu extraordinnaire.
Demian Maia was born Demian Maia Baptista in Sao Paolo, Brazil on November 6, 1977. He is a mixed martial arts fighter and also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and disciple like Silva. His most notable victories include his fight against Chael Sonnen and Nate Quarry. While he was in his teens,Demian began studying Kung Fu and Karate and later on, Jiu-Jitsu after he was introduced to it by his cousin. This fighter is also a hold of a degree in Journalism but found his enthusiasm in martial arts and later on, decided to go on a full-time fighting career.
He had marked his career when he stepped into the UFC circle in August 7, 2007 by way of defeating Ryan Jensen via a rear naked choke in Round One. Because of this, he earned $40,000 and was awarded with the Submission of the Night award. After that, he won again in UFC 83 and in UFC 87 but was defeated at UFC 102 via knocked-out 21 seconds into the fight courtesy of Nate Marquardt.
