why do fans hold up scarves at soccer games?

by MasterBlaster on June 2, 2010

I was watching the liverpool vs barcelona champions league game and at the end, all the liverpool fans held up their scarves and sang a traditional song. Why do they hold up the scarves? Is there a significance to it, or is it just like waving a flag with pride?

Not much significance…Just showing the loyalty! UP THE REDS!

Its really only Liverpool fans who do that regularly…I’ve never seen it done at any other UK team and I’ve been watching for 25 years. The song is called “You’ll never walk alone”.

There’s no real significance in it..its just supposed to look and sound impressive in order to encourage the team and show their support.
